Beeswax is the original candle wax and truly organic candle wax (hence it’s the highest grade and most expensive candle wax); it has been used for candles for more than a millennia.
The commonplace soy wax seen in most commercial scented candles nowadays are derived from the soy bean through a high number of chemical and physical processes. Soy wax is produced from soybean oil but may contain other non-organic ingredients, such as hexane. Hexane is a neurotoxin petrochemical solvent that is listed as a hazardous air pollutant with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Essential oils may contain phthalates, and recently there has been concern linking high levels of phtalates to health issues, especially in children. Moreover, essential oils are expensive, tend to evaporate when they are burned because the flash point is so low, and can’t throw a scent across the room as strongly as fragrance oils meant for candles.
Using phthalate-free candle fragrance oils or DIY oil infusions, participants can blend their own unique scents and create their own truly safe (and cheaper) organic aromatherapy candles along with their own fragrance oil reed diffusers, using readily available materials from local stores; soy wax is manufactured only in the United States and have to be imported.
